Position Description

Deque is searching for a native mobile accessibility engineer consultant/coach who is an expert in interpreting and advising on accessibility standards, principles, techniques and best practices – including Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) – that can also teach agile native mobile team how to incorporate accessibility in the development process in order to create accessible apps by default. This individual may perform robust technical assessments and be assigned to multiple agile teams (including Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Designers, Content Creators, Business Analysts, Developers, and Quality Engineers) and will help them understand how accessibility fits into their role. The consultant/coach will review designs, translate the designs into accessibility acceptance criteria, and perform automated and manual  Quality Assurance of development work. You will work directly with customer organizations that have committed to improving their digital content and improving their applications. A strong candidate for this role is proactive, a life-long learner, and has a track record of delivering exceptional service.

Responsibilities

  • Digital accessibility subject matter expert specializing in native mobile apps (iOS and Android) who applies Deque’s interpretation of WCAG standards to provide on-demand support on design, development, content and QA questions.
  • Monitor changes and improvements to iOS and Android operating systems and their accessibility features with the goal of continually being up to date with platform updates.
  • Conduct design reviews, providing feedback and suggestions for addressing concerns.
  • Attend Agile ceremonies (stand ups, refinement meetings, sprint planning meetings, etc.) as part of a coaching role, using these as an opportunity to gain knowledge of the workings of the teams, answer questions and provide insight.
  • Translate designs into user story requirements with Product Owners and Business Analysts to provide accessibility acceptance criteria which developers can use to develop components that meet accessibility guidelines.
  • Provide a scope for quality assurance engineers (QAs) for testing.
  • Evaluate the accessibility of pre-production components for assigned product teams or occasionally conduct larger-scale assessments on apps.
  • Provide shadowing and informational training opportunities, through weekly one on one, and other meeting types, for assigned client team members with the goal of helping them progress to self-sufficiency.
  • Collaborate with other accessibility coaches to promote consistent accessibility guidance and techniques.
  • Facilitate role-specific training which includes empathy and instruction pertaining to role responsibilities for the design, implementation, and testing of applications that meet WCAG standards.
  • Perform WCAG 2.X A/AA assessments on mobile apps utilizing the Deque methodology.

Requirements

  • Passion for digital accessibility and a desire to become a world class expert in the subject
  • Proven expertise in helping to create accessible native mobile applications.
  • Experience evaluating native mobile apps for WCAG 2.1/2.0 AA conformance
  • Experience performing design reviews and translating into user stories for native apps
  • Intermediate skill level and accessibility testing experience with the following screen readers:
    • VoiceOver
    • Talkback
  • Strong understanding of the iOS and Android accessibility APIs
  • Ability to write accessibility recommendations for remediation
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Strong communication skills with all stakeholders
  • Considering U.S. citizens and permanent residents due to client security requirements

Preferred

  • At least 3 years of current experience developing iOS or Android native applications, with at least 5 years of total experience in digital accessibility
  • 5+ years of experience in professional digital accessibility testing and consulting. Additional experience may qualify for a Senior Consultant role.
  • Detailed knowledge of Deque Mobile Software Tools (axe DevTools for iOS and Android) or similar tools
  • Familiarity with integrating accessibility testing into unit tests
  • Familiarity with agile application development processes, technologies and tools
  • Certifications/Credentials:
    • IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC)
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Candidate capable of obtaining and maintaining a U.S. security clearance
