Accessibility Awareness Lab

Help your team understand how people with disabilities experience and use technology.

Build understanding with an Accessibility Awareness Lab

Imagining how someone who is blind or has limited mobility uses a smartphone can be challenging. The Accessibility Awareness Lab helps your team understand and experience diverse ways to interact with technology when experiencing a temporary or permanent disability.

Through hands-on activities with assistive technologies and related products, your team will:

  • Learn how people with disabilities use computers and websites.
  • Experience the challenges of inaccessible technology.
  • Gain insights from people with disabilities.

How the Awareness Lab works

Our Awareness Lab is an onsite, interactive learning experience led by Deque Experts. By hosting a lab, your team will:

  • Explore various assistive technologies and innovative products.
  • Gain awareness of different disabilities.
  • Learn from people with firsthand experience at living with a disability.

Accessibility Awareness Lab resources

Below you will find linked resources for attendees of Deque’s Accessibility Awareness Lab and for Deque client’s that host these events.

Awareness Lab attendees

The Awareness Lab attendee file (PDF) provides all the printed materials displayed on the event tables in an accessible format. If any additional assistance is needed, please see your on-site event host.

Awareness Lab hosts

Deque client’s that are hosting an on-site Awareness Lab will have received an event instruction packet from your Deque coordinator. These two documents will need to be printed prior to the event: lab passport (PDF) and star tracing (PDF)

DIY accessibility Awareness Lab resource

As part of our digital equality mission for greater social good Deque offers a free Do-it-Yourself (DIY) Awareness Lab kit to build and run your own event.
